This gorgeous snake is native to New Guinea, parts of Indonesia, and Australia. As its name suggests, the green tree python (Morelia viridis, also Chondropython viridis prior to 1993) is a bright green snake which lives in trees. It hunts small mammals and reptiles.

Being tree-dwelling, they have a characteristic resting pose, wherein they drape a couple coils of themselves, saddle-fashion, over a branch and tuck their head in the middle.

Green tree pythons can grow to be about 6 feet (2m) long, with females slightly heavier than males. The bright colors of the adults (and the young, which start out brilliant lemon-yellow or bright red) make these a popular pet among reptile enthusiasts, and of course this has led to an unfortunate trade in wild-caught animals.

Despite the trade, the green tree python is listed as a species of least concern on the IUCN list of endangered species.
